His immediate past club’s general secretary Ronald Chiwaula (Civil Service) confirmed the transfer in an interview on Thursday.

“It is true Bashir has gone to pursue a new chapter in his career in Mozambique. He had signed a one-year deal with a Nampula side. He’s gone as a free agent having not signed a fresh contract with Civo. We wish him all the best,” he said.

Bashir becomes the fourth Malawian player to join a Mozambican top-flight league team this year after Richard Mbulu, Chikoti Chirwa and Yamikani Chester, who signed one-year deals with Costa Do Sol.

Other Malawians in the Mozambican top league are John ‘CJ’ Banda (UD Songo), Bright Munthali and Mathews Sibale (Vilankulo).

Renowned sports analyst Charles Nyirenda said the influx of players to neighbouring Mozambique is because local clubs do not pay well.

He said: “We don’t give to players what they deserve so when teams from Mozambique come with a good package, they can’t refuse. You know Mozambique teams monitor our league, our national team games. When teams play in Dedza, Mozambican teams send their scouts.”

However, he said the problem is that the players are given short contracts. “If you have observed our players sign on year-long contracts. That’s not good. But I think it a clever move on the part of Mozambican teams because they don’t want to take a gamble,” said Nyirenda.
